About Maupin: U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Keith “Matt” Maupin, 24, of Batavia, Ohio, disappeared on April 9, 2004, when insurgents south of Baghdad attacked his convoy with small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. His remains were found on March 20, 2008. Prior to his disappearance, Maupin served as part of the 724th Transportation Company in Bartonville, Illinois. He is survived by his mother, Carolyn; father, Keith; a brother and sister; and many other friends and family members. RIP soldier.

A quick note about “Hero WODs”: We have a lot of new faces around Daybreak so we wanted to quickly reflect on what a HERO WOD means. Most Hero WODs are sanctioned by CrossFit headquarters and the WODs structure usually has significance. In the WOD above, the 49 reps likely represents the date of his passing on 4/9.

These WODs are designed to be tougher than most and not many CrossFitters finish these WODs RX nor within a time cap. And, of course, that’s okay, right? The real purpose of these WODs (besides getting a kick-arse workout) isn’t about your time or your score… it’s about your attitude. Daybreak uses these WODs to remind us to make the extra effort to stay positive and encourage one another  go ahead and give a mid-WOD high five to that member next to you! And when you hit those tough spots in the WOD, think about the effort and sacrifice our servicemen, servicewomen, fire/police and first responders make every day.
