THE DAYBREAK EFFECT

Q&A

What got you started with CrossFit?

My brother and sister in-law had just started crossfit and after a couple months they raved about the atmosphere in a box, the work outs and the results they were seeing. I was really determined to get back into shape after a long summer and did not want to join another gym knowing from previous experiences I would get bored with it and stop going. I began reading up on crossfit and came across Daybreak Crossfit in the Wayland Recreational Department Programs. I decided to give it a shot.

What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit movement?

My favorite movements are Push Presses, Push Jerks and working on the rig (pull-ups, etc) is really growing on me. My least favorite movement are snatches, especially finishing in a squat.

What is your proudest CrossFit accomplishment in the box?

I have a had a lot fun accomplishments in the box, a lot of “firsts”. I got my first pull up after a couple months, first handstand push up, recently got my first bar muscle up. I have never been strong with any type of squat, and couldn’t even do an overhead squat with just the barbell when I started. I recently got 10 overhead squats at 125 lbs. I am really pleased with the progress/improvement. I would had never imagined that I would enjoy and actually look forward to a squat work out.

What has been the impact of CrossFit on your life outside the box?

Crossfit has had a very positive impact outside of the box. I find myself being more confident and having a more positive attitude. I have more energy with a desire to be more active as opposed to hanging around and being lazy. Due to this new attitude I think I have become a better father and husband.

Give us one fun fact about yourself. (Something not everyone knows)

I walk in my sleep. It actually got me kicked out of Cub Scouts.

What keeps you motivated to come back for more, no matter how tough the WOD?

The results, positive and friendly attitude at the box, coaching and personal goals keep me motivated to come back to the gym.

What advice would you give someone new to Daybreak?

I would advise someone new to Daybreak to not feel intimidated, scale your workouts to your abilities and listen to everything Mel says while she is coaching. She is an excellent coach and motivator, and given her credentials, we’re lucky to have her here in our own backyard.  I always learn or pick up something new every time she coaches a movement or WOD.
